The Simple Invoice
A simple invoice is a stripped-down invoice that keeps only what is required to get paid: who you are, who owes you, a number and a date, what the charge is for, the total, and how to pay. No branding exercises, no ten-column tables, no legal boilerplate. For a huge share of small businesses and freelancers, this is not a compromise — it is the correct format.
Simple does not mean incomplete. The live example below is a single-line-item invoice that would satisfy a client, an accountant, and a tax inspector. Here is what earns a place on it, and what does not.

What a simple invoice cannot omit
Nine things are non-negotiable: the word "Invoice", a unique invoice number, your name or business name with contact details, the client's name, the issue date, a description of what you are charging for, the amount, the total due, and payment instructions with a due date. Remove any of these and you have created a reason for the payment to stall — a missing number breaks the client's bookkeeping, a missing due date makes "late" unenforceable, missing payment details guarantee a reply-all asking for them.
Tax is conditional: if you are registered to charge VAT, GST, or sales tax, it must appear on its own line with the rate. If you are not, leave it off entirely.
What you can safely leave out
Purchase-order numbers (unless the client uses them), multi-column discount structures, itemized expense breakdowns, terms-and-conditions pages, and logos are all optional. A single well-written line item — "Garden maintenance, May 2026" — beats four vague ones. Long payment-terms paragraphs compress to three words: "Due in 14 days." The test for every element is whether removing it could delay payment or break someone's records; if not, it can go.
