Free Handyman Invoice Template

A handyman visit is rarely one job. It is a door that sticks, a shelf to hang, a leaking tap and a fence board — all on one invoice. This free handyman invoice template (Word .docx and Excel .xlsx below) is laid out for that: one line per task, so the customer sees every job they asked for and what each cost.

The free generator below does the same thing without the document editing. Type each task, your hours and any materials, and download a finished PDF with the totals worked out — handy when you invoice from the van between jobs.

Itemize by task, not just by hour

Customers approve invoices faster when they can match each line to something they asked for. Instead of "6 hours labor", list "Rehang and plane sticking back door — 1.5 hrs", "Mount TV and conceal cables — 2 hrs" and so on. If you charge a minimum visit fee or a trip charge, show it as its own line.

Materials you bought for the job — hardware, paint, lumber, fixtures — go on separate lines. Keep your receipts; if a customer questions a cost you can show exactly what you paid.

Pricing small jobs fairly

Many handymen use a minimum charge (often one or two hours) so short visits still cover travel time, then bill in half-hour increments after that. Whatever structure you use, write it on your quote and repeat it on the invoice so there are no surprises.

For repeat customers such as landlords, invoice consistently — same layout, same terms, sequential invoice numbers. It makes their bookkeeping easy, and customers whose bookkeeping is easy pay on time.

FAQ

Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?

Hourly suits small, unpredictable repairs; flat pricing suits well-defined jobs like assembling furniture or mounting a TV. Many handymen combine both — a flat price for known tasks and an hourly rate for everything else.

How do I bill several small jobs on one visit?

Put each task on its own line with its time or price, add materials separately, and let the invoice total them. It is clearer for the customer than a single lump-sum labor line.

Do I need to charge sales tax as a handyman?

It depends on your location and whether you sell materials. Some places tax materials but not labor. Check your local rules — the generator lets you add tax as a percentage or a fixed amount.
